No matter the reason, active shooting situations are a reality of our time. If you listen to the news you will hear of a lockdown almost every day. Reasons may be anything from a bomb threat to a bank robbery suspect or car theft suspect on the loose in the neighborhood. Lockdowns happen at k-12 schools, universities, hospitals, churches, businesses or any other place where people work, play, learn and meet.

Locking Down

A lockdown is defined as a state of isolation or restricted access instituted as a security measure. typically all access to the building or campus is restricted and any personnel, students, workers or visitors inside are confined to the building or rooms they are currently in. Many schools use a three tiered system:

  • Stay Put – used when there is a minor emergency in the building with no danger to students or staff

  • Secured Perimeter – used when there’s a danger in the surrounding community, i.e. police searching for a criminal suspect in the area

  • Lockdown – used when there’s a direct threat to the school or in the immediate area of the school

On Oct 14 2014 there was an active shooter near the Canadian Parliament building in Ottawa. The city went on lockdown and not knowing what the situation was and using an abundance of caution several city blocks were closed. Most buildings in the area were on lockdown. The “perimeter” of the lockdown was expanded “substantially” as the officials tried to gain an understanding of the depth of the crisis. Even the The Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. was on lockdown at the beginning.

Many buildings were on lockdown for hours. As they were searched for the suspect(s) and as the situation became clearer, people would be allowed to move about or leave the area. In some cases, people were locked in their offices for upwards of 16 hours!

Most lock-down situation are shorter term events. The situation in Ottawa was a little extreme but shows what could happen.

Imagine the lockdown

Most of us can imagine being stuck in a car with our family for several hours...but what about being stuck in the same classroom or office with 15 or so 12yr olds for several hours. No food, no water and worse of all...no potty! You can't be expected to hold it for hours! You are all scared, confused and have no idea what is happening beyond your walls.

Having a lockdown kit can offer some comfort to those stuck in the same place for hours.
