September is National Preparedness Month. It serves as a reminder by the federal government that you should have taken steps to prepare your family should a crisis happen. That bares repeating; the federal government suggests that you take the steps to prepare your family for a crisis. Over the last 30 days Germany, Czechoslovakia and Finland have all suggested (in some cases more strongly than others) that their citizens build up some preparations for a crisis. If you listen on the radio or see it on tv or billboards...our gov't/FEMA urges us daily to do so. If you think about it...it really does make sense to do so.
The term "Preppers" has gotten a wacky connotation to it over the last several years. Here is the truth...If you have put a blanket, or a coat, some water, some food in your car..."just in case" or if you have some food and maybe a flashlight stashed in your desk drawer at work...."just in case"....you too are a prepper! You have taken the initial steps to ensure that you have something needed at a time when you need it.
Obviously as in all things there are various degrees of preparedness. Go for the basics and build on that. build your family a 72 hour kit with food and water. Expand that with a two week kit, then later, if you feel the need you can then expand to a three month, six month, twelve month or longer supply. You can get as deep into it as you want....but at least have the basics. No one expects you to have an underground bunker outfitted for 10 years. If you do....FANTASTIC.
Self reliance/self sufficiency and homesteading are another way to go. Having the ability to grow your own sustainable food supply for your family is a great thing if you have the means and inclination. In doing so you will also be building redundancy and secondary plans. Just in case.
Today is a good day to get started preparing for tomorrow. What are you waiting for? Not being prepared can be dangerous to you and your family. Take action....NOW.
